Australia's Acknowledgment of Blackbirding Highlights Historical Slave Trade Involvement
Australia has formally acknowledged its historical involvement in the slave trade through a practice known as blackbirding, which involved the coercion and kidnapping of Pacific Islanders to work in the sugar cane and cotton industries. This acknowledgment comes as part of the June 2026 bilateral Nakamal agreement between Australia and Vanuatu. The practice, which took place between 1860 and 1906, saw up to 62,000 Pacific Islanders brought to Australia under false pretenses, often facing harsh conditions and exploitation. The release of a new book, 'Blackbirding, A Reckoning with the Australian Slave Trade,' by Ryan Butta, has brought renewed attention to this dark chapter in Australian history.
