FTC Warns Veterans and Spouses About Fake Benefits Scam
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a warning to U.S. veterans and their spouses regarding a scam involving misleading postcards. These postcards falsely promise additional monthly veterans benefits through a non-existent 'Veterans Savings Program.' The scammers attempt to appear credible by referencing legitimate programs such as CHAMPVA or TRICARE For Life. The primary goal of this scam is to obtain personal and financial information, including Social Security numbers and bank account details, from unsuspecting veterans. The FTC advises recipients not to respond to these postcards or use any contact information provided on them. Instead, veterans with questions about their VA benefits should contact the VA Benefits Hotline directly at 1-800-827-1000. Suspected scams can be reported to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or to the VA through VSAFE.gov or 1-833-38V-SAFE.
