IEA Report Highlights Solar Power as Leading Energy Source in 2025
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released a report indicating that solar photovoltaic (PV) technology was the largest contributor to global energy supply growth in 2025, accounting for over 25% of the increase. This marks the first time a modern renewable source has led global primary energy supply growth. The report also notes that renewable sources and nuclear power met nearly 60% of the growth in energy demand. The IEA's executive director, Fatih Birol, emphasized the expanding electrification of economies and the significant role of solar PV in meeting energy demand. The report highlights a decline in coal-fired electricity generation and a rise in battery storage capacity, which supports the integration of renewable energy.
