Pensacola Police Department to Add Two New K-9s After Retirement of Weapons-Sniffing Dog
The Pensacola Police Department (PPD) recently retired one of its weapons-sniffing K-9s, creating a need for specialized canine assistance. Public Information Officer Mike Wood stated that a weapons-sniffing dog is a top priority for the department. Currently, the PPD relies on neighboring agencies, such as the Gulf Breeze Police Department, for such capabilities. The Gulf Breeze Police Department's K-9 'Roux' is the only K-9 in Santa Rosa County trained to detect firearms, bombs, and ammunition, and is primarily stationed at Gulf Breeze High School. The PPD is set to add two new K-9s to its unit, with their specialties yet to be assigned. The department is considering different roles, including patrol dogs, which are more aggressive, and passive dogs trained to sniff for weapons, electronics, or bombs.
