Exploring the Oldest Weapons in Human History
Archaeological evidence suggests that weapons have existed for hundreds of thousands of years, with some of the oldest known examples being the Clacton spear, Schöningen spears, and Kathu Pan 1 spear points. The Clacton spear, estimated to be over 400,000 years old, was discovered in England and is believed to have been used by Homo heidelbergensis or Neanderthals. The Schöningen spears, found in Germany, date back 200,000 to 300,000 years and were likely used for hunting by early human species. The Kathu Pan 1 spear points, discovered in South Africa, are around 500,000 years old and suggest the use of hafted spears by early hominins. These ancient weapons provide insights into the material knowledge and hunting strategies of early humans.
