U.S. Coast Guard Maintains Port Security Advisory for Ten African Nations, Citing Ineffective Antiterrorism Measures
The U.S. Coast Guard has kept ten African countries on its port security advisory list, indicating that their ports are not maintaining effective antiterrorism measures. The countries affected are Madagascar, Cameroon, Seychelles, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Libya, Comoros, and São Tomé and Príncipe. This advisory, issued under the U.S. Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002, allows the U.S. to impose additional conditions on vessels arriving from these locations. Nigeria was recently removed from this list after the Coast Guard determined its ports had implemented effective measures. The restrictions mean that vessels that have called at any of the listed countries during their previous five port calls before arriving in the U.S. must implement measures equivalent to Security Level 2 while in the affected country.
