EU Member States Push for Stricter Russian Visa Rules Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict
A coalition of nine EU member states, along with Iceland and Norway, is advocating for stricter visa conditions for Russian tourists. This initiative, led by Sweden and supported by countries including Czechia, Denmark, and Finland, aims to address the perceived inconsistency in the implementation of EU guidelines on Russian visa applications. The coalition argues that the current fragmented approach weakens the EU's stance against Russia, especially in light of ongoing military actions in Ukraine. The group has sent a joint letter to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Internal Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner, urging for new binding visa restrictions and better monitoring of existing guidelines. The letter highlights security risks associated with the movement of Russian military personnel and calls for a unified EU response.
