Researchers Identify Pathway to Mitigate Statin-Induced Muscle Pain
Researchers at McMaster University have discovered a biological pathway that may explain why some patients experience muscle pain when taking statins, a common cholesterol-lowering medication. This finding, published in Science Advances, highlights an interaction between the immune system and muscle cell metabolism that contributes to muscle damage. Statins are widely used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, but muscle-related side effects can lead patients to reduce their dosage or discontinue use. The study suggests that the muscle side effects are caused by a disruption in muscle cell energy production, which triggers an immune response leading to tissue damage. The research team, led by Jonathan Schertzer, found that blocking this immune response in muscle cells could prevent much of the damage, potentially allowing patients to benefit from statins without experiencing adverse effects.
