Family of University of Iowa Employee Detained by ICE Calls for Her Return, Congresswoman Responds
The family of Fatou Traore, a University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics custodian, is advocating for her release after she was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on September 24. According to her son, Esoumaila Diallo, ICE agents stopped Traore in Iowa City while she was en route to pick up her sister. Traore, originally from Ivory Coast, has resided in Iowa City for decades and is reportedly being held at a facility in Monroe, Louisiana, with a scheduled deportation to Sierra Leone, a country her family states she has never visited. Local advocates, including Mazahir Salih, executive director of the Immigrant Welcome Network of Johnson County, are assisting the family. During a rally, speakers urged U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks to intervene.
