Safal Kiswahili Prize for African Literature Celebrates 10th Anniversary
The Safal Kiswahili Prize for African Literature marks its 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of promoting Kiswahili literature. Established in 2014, the prize was created to recognize and reward excellence in creative writing in Kiswahili, a widely spoken African language. The initiative has been supported by various organizations, including Mabati Rolling Mills in Kenya, ALAF Limited in Tanzania, and Cornell University in the U.S. Over the years, the prize has awarded over $150,000 to writers, helping to publish and distribute their works across East Africa. The prize has played a crucial role in elevating Kiswahili literature, providing a platform for writers to gain recognition and encouraging the creation of new works in African languages.
