Asian Development Bank Supports Palau's Post-Pandemic Recovery Efforts for Vulnerable Groups
The Asian Development Bank (ADB), with support from the Asian Development Fund and the governments of Ireland and Japan, is actively assisting Palau in its recovery from the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic severely affected Palau's tourism-dependent economy, leading to significant job losses and exacerbating challenges for vulnerable populations. ADB's initiatives focus on improving health, strengthening livelihoods, and protecting at-risk individuals. Specific programs include home-based music therapy and wellness activities for older people to enhance physical and mental well-being, and support for women farmers to expand taro production and access new markets. Additionally, the project addresses gender-based violence by establishing an integrated support system, including a 24-hour hotline, crisis counseling, and referrals. These efforts aim to foster self-sufficiency, security, and resilience among vulnerable groups in Palau.
