Colorado Fourteeners Initiative Responds to Vandalism on Mount of the Holy Cross
The Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI) has reported an incident of vandalism on Mount of the Holy Cross, where unidentified hikers spray-painted at least five cairns bright yellow. The vandalism was discovered on July 30, when a neighbor of a CFI staff member reported the defaced trail markers. The U.S. Forest Service is currently investigating the incident. According to Lloyd Athearn, CFI's executive director, the spray-painting might have occurred earlier, as another hiker, Andrew Jahnke, reported witnessing the act on July 11. Jahnke described seeing three older men, one dressed like a park ranger, who appeared to have just finished painting the cairns. The motivation behind the act is speculated to be an attempt to make the markers more visible, although Athearn emphasized that such actions are unnecessary and unauthorized.
