FIU Suspends Two Students Over Racist Texts in Controversial Group Chat
Florida International University (FIU) has suspended two students for their involvement in a group chat that contained racist, sexist, and antisemitic messages. The chat, known as 'Nazi Heaven,' was exposed by The Miami Herald, revealing discussions that included threats against Black individuals. The students, Abel Carvajal and Dariel Gonzalez, were leaders in the College Republicans at FIU. Carvajal, the chat's creator, and Gonzalez, a recruitment chairman, have been banned from campus for two years. The university cited violations of the student conduct code, including promoting hate speech and endangering the safety of others. The suspensions follow criticism of FIU's initial response to the revelations, with some accusing the university of a double standard in handling student conduct violations.
