Governor Ivey Announces $52 Million in GOMESA Funding for Coastal Alabama Projects
Governor Kay Ivey has announced that coastal Alabama projects will receive approximately $52 million in funding through the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) of 2006. This substantial allocation will support 21 distinct projects focused on environmental education and outreach, enhancing boating and recreation access, and improving water quality, among other areas outlined in the 2006 legislation. GOMESA mandates that 37.5% of qualified revenue generated from oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico be shared with the coastal states of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, as well as local governments within these states. In Alabama, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) administers these funds, while Mobile and Baldwin counties receive separate direct funding from the federal government.
