Germany Explores Defense Options After New Generation Fighter Program Cancellation
Germany is reassessing its future combat aviation strategies following the cancellation of the New Generation Fighter (NGF) program, which was a collaborative effort with France and Spain. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced that the Bundeswehr is considering three primary options to address the capability gap expected post-2040 due to the program's termination. These options include ordering additional F-35 aircraft, joining another international defense project, or initiating a new project under German leadership, potentially led by Airbus and other partners. The decision comes after irreconcilable differences between industrial partners Airbus and Dassault led to the cessation of the NGF element of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program. Despite this setback, work on other components of the Next-Generation Weapon System, such as Remote Carriers and the air combat cloud, will continue.
