Federal Prosecutors Decline to Charge ICE Agent in Minneapolis Shooting, State Charges Proceed
Federal prosecutors in Minneapolis have decided not to pursue charges against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agent Christian Castro, who shot and wounded Venezuelan national Julio Sosa-Celis in January. This decision comes despite earlier preparations by the U.S. attorney's office to present a case to a grand jury for deprivation of rights under color of law, a charge similar to one faced by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Agent Castro shot Sosa-Celis through a closed door during a Trump administration immigration operation after a car chase involving Sosa-Celis' roommate. Initially, federal authorities charged Sosa-Celis and his roommate with assault based on Castro's claims, but these charges were dropped after surveillance video disproved the allegations.
