Georgia Republican John Kennedy Resigns from State Senate to Focus on Lieutenant Governor Campaign
Republican state Senator John Kennedy of Georgia has announced his resignation from the state legislature to concentrate on his campaign for lieutenant governor. Kennedy, who has served as the president pro tem of the Georgia Senate since 2023, stated that continuing his legislative duties while campaigning would be a disservice to his constituents and supporters. His resignation is effective immediately, allowing him to campaign full-time and raise funds, which is prohibited during the legislative session. Kennedy's departure comes as he joins a crowded Republican field for the lieutenant governor race, with the current lieutenant governor, Burt Jones, opting to run for governor. A special election will be called by Governor Brian Kemp to fill Kennedy's seat in Senate District 18.
