14-Year-Old Qualifies for Vermont Gubernatorial Ballot, Sparking Debate on Youth in Politics
A 14-year-old, Dean Roy, has successfully qualified for Vermont's gubernatorial ballot, marking the first time a candidate under 18 has appeared. Roy, who does not identify with a particular party, aims to initiate a movement to encourage more young people to engage in political change, with housing being a key issue for his campaign. His former history teacher, James Carpenter, described Roy as earnest and pragmatic. While Vermont Governor Phil Scott's office commended Roy's effort to get involved in politics, press secretary Amanda Wheeler stated that the Governor believes a teenager lacks the necessary experience and lived perspectives for the role. Peter Teachout, a professor at Vermont Law and Graduate School, noted that while a 4-year-old could theoretically run for governor in Vermont, it's unlikely Vermonters would support such a candidate in practice.
