Hantavirus Survivor Shares Her Experience and Recovery Journey
Evie H., an 18-year-old from North Dakota, recounts her harrowing experience with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare and deadly rodent-borne illness. Contracting the virus at age 14, Evie's symptoms escalated rapidly from a headache to cardiac arrest within a week. Her condition required intensive medical intervention, including the use of an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine, which acts as a heart-lung bypass. Despite the severity of her illness, Evie survived without brain damage, a testament to the timely medical care she received. Her recovery was challenging, involving significant physical rehabilitation to regain strength and normal function.
