Teacher-Preparation Programs Shift Towards Science of Reading Amidst Challenges
A recent national review by the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) reveals that a majority of teacher-preparation programs are now incorporating essential components of reading instruction, aligning with the 'science of reading.' However, many programs still rely on outdated or discredited methods, and few adequately prepare teachers to support struggling or non-native readers. The review assessed 700 programs, noting a significant increase in those earning top grades for including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Despite progress, some programs continue to use outdated practices like 'three cueing,' which is not supported by scientific evidence.
