New Ocean Anomaly and Super El Niño to Reshape U.S. Winter 2026/2027 Weather Patterns
A new ocean anomaly, known as the positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), is emerging alongside a strengthening Super El Niño in the tropical Pacific. This development is expected to significantly influence weather patterns across the Northern Hemisphere, including the United States, during the Winter of 2026/2027. The positive IOD creates opposing temperature anomalies in the Indian Ocean, which, when combined with the Super El Niño, can alter jet stream patterns. This dual-ocean atmospheric system is anticipated to impact temperature, precipitation, and snowfall trends in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The IOD and Super El Niño are connected through synchronized tropical wave forcing, affecting pressure, rain, and trade winds, which in turn steer the Pacific jet stream.
