US Defense Innovation Unit Tests Quantum Sensor Navigation System for GPS-Independent Flight
The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), a development arm of the U.S. Department of Defense, has successfully tested a quantum sensor-based flight navigation system over the Pacific Ocean. This system, developed under the MagNav program, allows for precise position determination without relying on GPS signals. The technology is designed to function even if GPS is jammed by adversaries, experiences outages, or cannot be received. The MagNav system, created by Honeywell Aerospace, utilizes quantum sensors to detect changes in the Earth's natural magnetic field, creating a magnetic field map. This map enables the system to determine an aircraft's position independently of GPS, weather conditions, and visibility.
