MTA Auctions MetroCard Vending Machines as Transit History Souvenirs
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is auctioning off MetroCard vending machines, offering a unique opportunity for collectors and transit enthusiasts to own a piece of New York City transit history. These machines, first installed in 1999, were phased out in December as MetroCards were replaced by the OMNY system. The auction includes both MetroCard Vending Machines (MVMs) and MetroCard Express Machines (MEMs), sold in non-operational condition. Bidding opened on August 5 and will close on August 19, with winning bidders required to arrange pickup in Brooklyn or Queens. This auction marks the end of an era for the iconic MetroCard system.
