TSA Workers' Union Sues Over TSA Gold+ Program, Citing Lack of Transparency
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), representing 47,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers, has filed a lawsuit against the TSA. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, seeks the release of records related to TSA Gold+, a new airport security screening program. The union claims the program's expansion into privatized security screening was conducted without formal disclosure, violating the statutory deadline for a Freedom of Information Act request. The AFGE discovered the program by accident when a flyer was found at Orlando International Airport. TSA Gold+ is described as an evolution of the existing Screening Partnership Program, allowing airports to partner with third-party contractors for security screening. The union is concerned about the privatization of federal jobs and the potential impact on public safety and job security for TSA officers.
