Edison Township Faces Partial Government Shutdown Due to Budget Impasse
Edison Township in New Jersey is experiencing a partial government shutdown after a budget vote failed to occur due to a lack of quorum. The council meeting was disrupted when Councilmember Richard Brescher left, leaving only three members present, which was insufficient to proceed with the vote. Mayor Sam Joshi criticized Brescher's actions, calling them 'reckless and childish,' as they prevented the council from discussing or amending the budget. Brescher, however, argued that the mayor had not provided a complete picture of the situation, noting that a public budget presentation was not held this year. As a result of the impasse, hundreds of city employees, including 10 police officers, have been furloughed. An emergency meeting has been scheduled to address temporary appropriations to fund the government.
