Senate Democrats Request CBO Investigation into Pentagon's Iran War Cost Estimates
Senate Democrats, led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Jeff Merkley, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have called on the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to investigate discrepancies in the Pentagon's reported costs of the Iran war. The Pentagon's comptroller, Jules Hurst, recently reported to Congress that the war has cost $29 billion, an increase from an earlier estimate of $25 billion. However, independent estimates suggest the cost could be significantly higher, with figures ranging from $32 billion to $50 billion. The Democrats' letter to the CBO highlights concerns over the transparency and accuracy of the Pentagon's public accounting of the war's expenses. The CBO, a nonpartisan agency, is tasked with providing budgetary and economic analysis to Congress.
