Brookline Parents Raise Concerns Over Playground Heat Risks
Parents in Brookline, Massachusetts, are voicing concerns about dangerously high temperatures on playground surfaces at the Driscoll School. According to Nicole McClelland, a parent who measured surface temperatures, readings reached as high as 130°F to 150°F (54°C to 66°C) on slides, obstacles, and ground surfaces. The rooftop playground, surrounded by bricks and reflective windows, exacerbates the heat due to its south-facing orientation and lack of shade. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has documented incidents of burns from hot playground equipment, even on days as cool as 74°F (23°C). Parents are advocating for immediate solutions, such as shade structures, to mitigate the risks. The Town of Brookline has acknowledged the issue and is working with local departments to explore safe and effective shade options.
