Mecklenburg County Officials Oppose State Proposal to Limit Property Tax Increases
Leaders from Mecklenburg County, the city of Charlotte, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have expressed strong opposition to a proposed state constitutional amendment that would limit the ability of local municipalities to increase property tax levies. During a joint legislative breakfast with Mecklenburg County's General Assembly delegation, officials argued that such a limit would severely impact the county's budget and educational services. Charles Jeter, CMS intergovernmental relations director, highlighted the potential negative effects on community services and education, likening it to the impact of the Opportunity Scholarship private school voucher. The officials advocated for targeted tax relief measures instead of a blanket policy, noting that the county already taxes below the statutory limit. Additionally, the meeting addressed concerns over the 2023 Parents Bill of Rights, which changed health screenings for students to an 'opt in' model, resulting in a significant decline in participation.
