Seven EU Frontline Nations Seek Brussels Funding for Tourism Sector Amid War Fears
Seven European Union countries—Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia—have formally requested financial assistance from the EU’s proposed €2 trillion Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) to support their tourism sectors. These nations, situated along Europe's eastern borders, are experiencing significant declines in tourism due to geopolitical developments and security concerns stemming from Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, as well as their proximity to Russia and Belarus. In a letter addressed to European Commissioners for Tourism and Cohesion, Apostolos Tzitzikostas and Raffaele Fitto, the tourism and finance ministers highlighted that tourism flows have considerably decreased in these regions.
