SPRITE Mission to Launch, Expanding Far-Ultraviolet Observations of Galaxies
The SPRITE (Supernova Remnants and Proxies for ReIonization Testbed Experiment) mission, developed by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP), is preparing for launch. This SmallSat, slightly larger than a toaster oven, will carry a pioneering far-ultraviolet imaging spectrograph. Led by LASP astrophysicist Brian Fleming, the mission aims to address fundamental questions about the early universe, including how radiation escapes from galaxies and spreads into intergalactic space, a process believed to be critical in shaping the universe's evolution. While the Hubble Space Telescope has detected some of these galaxies, its observations are limited to very distant objects, appearing as single points of light. SPRITE is designed to survey large areas of nearby galaxies in far-ultraviolet wavelengths, providing detailed spatial information that has previously been difficult to obtain.
