Deepfakes and AI-Generated Content Pose Growing Cybersecurity and Authenticity Concerns for Organizations
Deepfakes, which are synthetic or manipulated media created using artificial intelligence and machine learning, are becoming a significant concern for digital media integrity and public trust. These can include fake videos, AI-generated voices, manipulated images, and synthetic documents designed to appear legitimate. While the underlying technology is not inherently malicious, the risk emerges when this manipulated content is used for deceptive purposes, such as influencing decisions, stealing information, or causing financial and reputational damage. Organizations are increasingly challenged to determine the genuineness of content they receive, as AI makes it easier to create realistic but false images, videos, audio, and text. This issue extends beyond deepfakes to include 'AI hallucinations,' where AI systems produce convincing but incorrect information, leading to problems of both synthetic content (deliberately manipulated) and unreliable content (inaccurate or misleading without malicious intent).
