OpenAI Faces Lawsuit Over ChatGPT's Role in Canadian School Shooting
The families of victims from a school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, are suing OpenAI in U.S. federal court. The lawsuit claims that OpenAI's ChatGPT failed to alert authorities about the shooter's alarming interactions with the chatbot. The shooter, who killed several people including children and an educator, had reportedly used ChatGPT to discuss violent acts. OpenAI has expressed regret over the incident and stated that it has since strengthened its safeguards to prevent such misuse. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of 12-year-old Maya Gebala, who was critically injured, is part of a series of legal actions alleging negligence and product liability against OpenAI.
