House Passes Bipartisan GUARD Act, Co-Led by Representative Gottheimer, to Combat Senior Financial Scams
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Guarding Unprotected Aging Retirees from Deception Act, or GUARD Act (H.R. 2978), a bipartisan bill co-led by U.S. Representatives Zach Nunn (R-Iowa), Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), and Scott Fitzgerald (R-Wis.). The legislation aims to equip state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies with federal grant funding to investigate financial fraud and scams targeting older Americans. This includes sophisticated schemes like cryptocurrency investment scams, often referred to as 'pig butchering.' Representative Gottheimer emphasized that the bill provides law enforcement with necessary tools to track down fraudsters, recover stolen funds, and protect seniors who have spent a lifetime building their savings. The bill now advances to the Senate for further consideration.
