Research Develops Curcumin-Infused Wafers for Antibacterial Wound Dressing
A recent study has explored the development of composite wafers infused with curcumin, aimed at serving as antibacterial wound dressings. The research focused on the fabrication and characterization of these wafers using a combination of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, ethyl cellulose, and polyvinylpyrrolidone. The study assessed various physical and chemical properties of the wafers, including their thickness, density, folding endurance, and swelling index. The wafers demonstrated promising results in terms of uniformity and drug release profiles. The antimicrobial properties of the wafers were tested against bacteria such as E. Coli and B. Subtilis, showing significant zones of inhibition, particularly in formulations with higher curcumin content. The study also evaluated the wafers' water vapor transmission rate, which is crucial for maintaining optimal moisture levels at wound sites, thereby facilitating healing.
