North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen the sea trials of a new warship, the 5,000-ton destroyer Kang Kon, as part of efforts to build a nuclear-armed navy. This development comes ahead of a visit by Chinese leader Xi Jinping to North Korea, signaling Beijing's intent to strengthen ties with its nuclear-armed neighbor. The destroyer, which was repaired after a failed launch last year, is part of North Korea's plan to rapidly develop its naval forces. Kim Jong Un has emphasized the importance of the navy in the country's new five-year defense plan, which includes building larger destroyers and developing new underwater weapons. The visit by Xi Jinping is seen as a move to reinforce China's relationship with North Korea, despite the latter's prioritization of relations with Russia in recent years.
