Illinois Pumpkin Smash Events Promote Composting to Reduce Environmental Impact
Illinois residents are encouraged to compost their pumpkins after the fall season through community Pumpkin Smash events. These initiatives aim to prevent pumpkins from ending up in landfills, where their decomposition produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas contributing to climate change. Illinois, a leading pumpkin producer, faces a significant challenge in responsibly disposing of these seasonal decorations. The Illinois Extension, in partnership with environmental non-profit SCARCE, organizes these events, which have successfully composted over 1,600 tons of pumpkins since 2014. This effort has reduced nearly 1,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and diverted more than 345,000 gallons of water from landfills. Participants are advised to remove non-organic materials like candles, paint, and ribbons before dropping off their pumpkins, which are then transported to composting facilities to be processed into nutrient-rich compost.
