Wisconsin Secures Over $140 Million Federal Grant for Passenger Rail Modernization
Wisconsin, in collaboration with Governor Tony Evers, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), has successfully secured over $140 million in federal funding from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). This grant is designated for the modernization of up to 41 Charger locomotives that serve Amtrak's Midwest and Pacific Northwest routes, including the Milwaukee-Chicago Hiawatha line. The investment is part of a larger $5.3 billion federal initiative under the National Railroad Partnership Program (NRPP), which is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Senator Baldwin, a strong proponent of the BIL, emphasized the importance of this investment for the state's economy and the safety and efficiency of transportation. The funds will cover mid-life updates to mechanical equipment such as wheelsets, air compressors, traction motors, turbochargers, high-pressure fuel pumps, and diesel engines, ensuring the continued reliability of the fleet.
