San Diego State University Settles Title IX Lawsuit with Female Athletes Over Scholarship Disparities
San Diego State University (SDSU) has agreed to a settlement involving nearly 800 female student athletes who alleged they received less scholarship money than entitled under Title IX. The settlement includes a $300,000 payment to the athletes and $1.3 million in attorneys' fees. The lawsuit, initiated in 2022, claimed that the disparity in women's athletic scholarships had persisted for over a decade. Although SDSU did not admit any wrongdoing, it has agreed to an independent gender-equity review of its athletics department. The settlement is considered a significant victory by the athletes' attorney, potentially setting a precedent for similar cases at other institutions. SDSU maintains that it does not discriminate against female athletes and highlights its commitment to supporting and promoting their achievements.
