The Ocean Cleanup's New Initiative Targets Plastic Pollution in Los Angeles Rivers
The Ocean Cleanup, a Netherlands-based organization, is expanding its efforts to combat plastic pollution by deploying mechanized trash interceptors in the Los Angeles and San Gabriel rivers. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste entering the Pacific Ocean. The organization, led by Boyan Slat, has already installed a similar system in Ballona Creek, which has successfully captured 206 tons of garbage. The new interceptors are expected to be operational before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, with the goal of making plastic pollution in Santa Monica Bay and San Pedro Bay a thing of the past. The project is part of a broader strategy to address plastic pollution at its source, focusing on rivers that contribute significantly to oceanic plastic waste.
