Holy Trinity Cathedral in Salt Lake City Prepares for Multi-Million Dollar Seismic Upgrades and Renovations After 2020 Earthquake
The Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Greek Orthodox Church in Salt Lake City is preparing for extensive multi-million dollar renovations and seismic upgrades following damage sustained during a 5.7-magnitude earthquake on March 18, 2020. While the exterior of the century-old building largely withstood the quake due to prior seismic upgrades to its bell towers, the interior suffered nearly 1,500 feet of cracks. Although deemed structurally sound, the damage prompted a full seismic upgrade. The renovation plan involves stripping the interior down to the brick, adding shotcrete to thicken and strengthen the walls by six inches on each side, and completely replacing the interior iconostasis, a panel of religious icons. Some original icons dating back to 1906 will be moved to the cathedral's basement museum. The dome, though undamaged, requires plaster repair, and specialized cranes will lift it to install a diaphragm, allowing it to move with the earth during future seismic events.
