Hiroshima Commemorates Atomic Bomb Victims Amid Calls for Nuclear Disarmament
On the anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, over 50,000 people gathered at the Peace Memorial Park to honor the victims and call for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui urged world leaders to abandon nuclear deterrence, emphasizing the need for immediate action. The ceremony included a moment of silence at 8:15 a.m., the exact time the bomb was dropped in 1945. The names of 4,393 victims confirmed dead in the past year were added to a registry, bringing the total to 353,639. Survivors, known as hibakusha, continue to share their experiences to promote peace.
