New Jersey lawmakers have introduced a bill, A4732, that would require AI-driven chatbots to consistently notify users that they are interacting with a machine. This legislation aims to address concerns about the increasing sophistication of generative AI chatbots, which can mimic human personalities and form relationships with users. The Assembly Majority Office highlighted the growing use of these chatbots among vulnerable populations, including teens and seniors, and expressed concerns about potential impacts on mental health and real-world relationships. Assemblywoman Marisa Sweeney, D-Morris, the bill's sponsor, emphasized the need for transparency as AI companions become more adept at simulating human connection. The proposed notification would appear at the beginning of each chatbot session and re-emerge every three hours during interaction.
