Hurricane Sandy's Impact on the HMS Bounty: A Tragic Tale of Risk and Rescue
Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall on October 29, 2012, in Brigantine, New Jersey, brought devastating impacts to the U.S. East Coast. Among its many stories, the storm led to the tragic sinking of the HMS Bounty, a replica of the historic British Royal Navy ship. The vessel, captained by Robin Walbridge, set sail from New London, Connecticut, on October 25, 2012, despite warnings of the approaching storm. Walbridge believed the ship was safer at sea than in port. However, his decision to alter the ship's course directly into Sandy's path proved fatal. The ship began taking on water on October 28, and the crew was forced to abandon it early the next morning. The U.S. Coast Guard launched a daring rescue operation, saving 14 of the 16 crew members. Tragically, two lives were lost, including Captain Walbridge.
