Canvas Data Breach Disrupts California Colleges, Affecting Student Access
A significant cybersecurity breach has affected the Canvas learning management system, widely used by higher education institutions, leading to a widespread outage. The breach, claimed by the hacker group ShinyHunters, has impacted students and faculty at numerous California campuses, including UCLA and UC Berkeley, during finals preparations. The breach involved the theft of names, email addresses, and student ID numbers, but not sensitive information like passwords or financial data. In response, Instructure, the company behind Canvas, took the system offline to investigate and secure the platform, causing disruptions in accessing coursework and assignments.
