Markey and Moulton Exchange Accusations in Heated Massachusetts Senate Debate
Senator Ed Markey and Representative Seth Moulton engaged in a contentious debate as they vie for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat from Massachusetts. The debate, which is the second of three scheduled before the primary on September 1, saw both candidates accusing each other of dishonesty and financial impropriety. Moulton criticized Markey for his 2002 vote to authorize the Iraq War, a decision Markey has since called a mistake. Markey, in turn, accused Moulton of supporting a $1 trillion defense budget, a claim that was partially incorrect as Moulton did not vote for the actual appropriations. Both candidates claimed to be the true progressive, with Markey citing endorsements from prominent progressive leaders and Moulton highlighting his policy proposals. Financial disclosures were also a point of contention, with Markey criticizing Moulton's investments in defense-related companies and Moulton questioning Markey's transparency regarding his family's income.
