USS Georgia Submarine to be Decommissioned in 2026 After Over 40 Years of Service
The USS Georgia, an Ohio-class guided-missile submarine, is scheduled for decommissioning on July 27, 2026. This marks the final return of the submarine to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia, before its inactivation process begins. Commissioned on February 11, 1984, as an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine for Cold War nuclear deterrence, the USS Georgia was later redesignated as a guided-missile submarine on March 1, 2004. This conversion involved replacing nuclear missiles with 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles and integrating a chamber to host Navy SEALS and special operations forces. The USS Georgia will be the first Ohio-class guided-missile submarine to be removed from the fleet, and its decommissioning efforts are establishing a roadmap for the inactivation processes of subsequent boats in its class. Service members who served aboard the USS Georgia over its more than forty years in service have shared their experiences and paid homage to the vessel.
