Cape Cod Birds Begin Nesting Season Amid Challenges
Migratory birds have returned to Cape Cod, marking the start of the nesting season. After their long journeys, these birds focus on claiming territories, attracting mates, and building nests. Nest construction involves gathering materials such as dried grasses, twigs, mud, and even unconventional items like plastic or snakeskin. However, human activity, such as approaching nests for photographs or using binoculars in nesting areas, can inadvertently alert predators like crows to nest locations. This has led to changes in monitoring practices to protect vulnerable species like piping plovers. Additionally, the past winter's strong winds caused significant damage to osprey nests, forcing many birds to rebuild upon their return. Despite these challenges, birds like blue jays have been observed resourcefully collecting sticks, sometimes with leaves still attached, to camouflage their nests.
