Colchester Fire Department Responds to E-Scooter Fire in Apartment, Highlights Lithium-Ion Battery Risks
The Colchester Fire Department was dispatched to an apartment on Stuart Avenue following multiple reports of an e-scooter fire. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on a Friday night. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke on the upper floor and located the main body of the scooter on fire on the third floor. Firefighters largely contained the blaze using fire extinguishers. One individual was evaluated for coughing and a sore throat, symptoms consistent with smoke inhalation. The department issued a public reminder about the dangers associated with lithium-ion battery fires, emphasizing their rapid spread, intense heat, smoke production, and release of hazardous gases. They advised immediate evacuation and calling 911 if a device powered by such batteries begins smoking, overheating, making unusual sounds, or catches fire.
