Indiana Becomes 41st NRC Agreement State, Assumes Oversight of Radioactive Materials
Indiana has become the 41st state to assume regulatory authority over certain radioactive materials, following an agreement with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Governor Mike Braun and NRC Chairman Ho K. Nieh signed the formal agreement in Indianapolis, which takes effect on September 30. Under this agreement, Indiana will oversee approximately 213 licenses for the use of radioactive materials in medical, academic, and industrial settings within the state. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security will manage the program, with five health physicists responsible for licensing and inspections. This transfer of authority, authorized under Section 274 of the Atomic Energy Act, means that permit applicants will now go through state agencies, such as the Indiana Office of Energy Development or the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, instead of the NRC.
