2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season: Below-Average Activity Expected
The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season is set to begin on June 1, with forecasts indicating a potentially quieter season compared to previous years. According to South Carolina Public Radio, the Colorado State University outlook predicts 13 named storms, with six expected to become hurricanes and two reaching major hurricane status. This forecast suggests below-average activity, influenced by the anticipated development of El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean. El Niño typically increases wind shear across the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf, creating a less favorable environment for tropical cyclone formation. Despite this, the University of Arizona forecasts a more active season, expecting 20 named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major cyclones, due to unusually warm Atlantic sea surface temperatures.
